Inca Trail Classic Hike 4D Itinerary

From Cusco, we will make our way to the trailhead at  KM 82. This will be a comfortable drive through the Sacred Valley in the company of the early morning views of the towering snow capped mountains.

Once at KM 82, we will officially enter the Inca Trail. We will begin hiking towards our first archaeological site, Llactapata. This will be through typical dry forest and with stunning views of Apu Veronica. Our hike will be along gently rolling terrain and some gentle uphills to our campsite in Huayabamba.

Estimated hiking time: 6 to 7 hours

Total distance: 12 km

Highest altitude: 3,000 m.a.s.l.

Today will be considered the most challenging day along the Inca Trail. Leaving early from our campsite, we will begin our hike from local villages and farmland to subtropical forest.  Our lunch spot will be midway in Llulluchapampa.

After lunch, we will continue towards the trail’s highest point, Warmihuañusca Pass. This section of the trail will be mostly uphill. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with the breathtaking views of the Valley below!  We will continue for an additional 3KM (downhill) to our evening campsite in Pacaymayo.

Estimated hiking time: 6 to 7 hours

Total distance: 11 km

Highest altitude: 4,200 m.a.s.l.

After an early breakfast, we will begin our hike to some of the trail’s most stunning archaeological sites. The hike will be along gently rolling terrain and uphills. However, we will not hike as high as the previous day.

On this day, you will see the impressive sites of Runkurakay, Sayacmarka, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna.

Estimated hiking time: 7 to 8 hours

Total distance: 16 km

Highest altitude: 3,800 m.a.s.l.

Our plant for today will be to arrive early at the Inti Punku (Sun Gate). The hike from our campsite to the Inti Punku will be short but will entail some more hiking along steep, Inca stone steps. The reward?  Some of the best views of Machu Picchu at sunrise.

After your visit to Machu Picchu, you will  take the bus to Aguas Calientes town. Once in Aguas Calientes, you will be required to pick-up your belongings from the designated location and head to the train station for your train back to Ollantaytambo.
