The Lares Trail Hike is best known for its cultural component. This trail is not considered challenging, and is recommended for travellers hiking with children. The Lares Trail is the perfect option for travellers wishing to interact with some of the region’s most isolated and traditional Quechua communities.
ITINERARY
Lares Trail Hike 4D Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO – HUARAN – CANCHA CANCHA
Begin your adventure by heading to the Sacred Valley from where we will begin our hike to the small community of Cancha Cancha. The hike to Cancha Cancha is approximately 3 hours along ascending terrain. Our team will arrange for our lunch out in nature to make the most of our hike.
The small community of Cancha Cancha is one of the region’s most traditional and self-sustaining communities. This community has no access to a main road and its inhabitants still carry out their daily routines following their ancestral ways.

DAY 2: CANCHA CANCHA – KISWARANI
Today’s hike will be challenging. From our campsite we will begin our hike towards the trail highest point, Pachacutec Pass (4,500 m.a.s.l.). This section of the trail will be accompanied by views of glaciers, lakes, herds of alpacas and surrounding rugged valleys.
Once at the summit, we will make our descent (3 hours) to Kiswarani. Along the way, we will meet local villagers with their traditional outfits out and about on their daily herding routines. At Kiswarani, we will rest for the remaining afternoon.

DAY 3: KISWARANI – CUNCANI – LARES HOT SPRINGS – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES
Prepare for the most scenic day of the Lares trail. Today we will hike to the trail’s second mountain pass, Willqaqasa Pass (4,200 m.a.s.l.). The trail will take us from high andean puna and glacial lakes to gently rolling valleys and farming land. We will be rewarded with views of the mighty Colquecruz and Pitusiray Mountains.
Once at Cuncani, we will have the opportunity to meet the local children and their school facilities. We will spend some time here interacting with the children before taking our private transportation to the Lares hot springs.
Our lunch will be at the hot springs, where you will have the chance to soak in the natural volcanic waters of the springs. After lunch, we will take our private transportation to the train station in Ollantaytambo.
Our train ride to Aguas Calientes will be approximately 2 hours. In Aguas Calientes, we will drop you off at your hotel for your night’s stay.

DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
Your visit to Machu Picchu will be in the morning hours. With a guided tour of approximately 3 hours, you will wander around the citadel’s most iconic sectors and temples.
You will return to Cusco in the afternoon via train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and by car to the city of Cusco.
